When it comes to constructing a building it can be easy to forget critical features of the building that are hidden behind structural elements and walls. Ventilation is one of those features that lies within the structure of a building that if overlooked can have negative to drastic consequences for the building and its inhabitants.

One of the factors that ventilation affects is that of energy consumption. The larger a building is the greater inefficiencies of ventilation systems are amplified and in turn the cost. There are two elements to consider here, work efficiency and energy efficiency. These determine how much air the system moves and the how much energy it uses to move a unit of air.

The lack of enough ventilation and modern living patterns can contribute to an accumulation of excessive moisture and humidity, which can also result in poor air quality. Increasing ventilation rates and improving air distribution, can often be a cost effective method to reduce the levels of indoor pollutants. HVAC systems should be designed to meet minimum ventilation standards of local building codes. However, many systems are not properly maintained to ensure that the design ventilation rates are supplied.

In many buildings, positive pressure ventilation can eliminate the poor indoor air quality that often leads to serious health concerns. There are a few variations on the types of positive pressure ventilation units, and the type that you use will be determined by the property in which it is installed. Hardwood flooring is back! It is once again the preferred choice of home owners for wood flooring installations.

There was a time when the only product used for flooring was solid hardwood but with the passage of time, various varieties of classic wood floor emerged such as resilient tile that resembles the wood, engineered wood, laminate "wood" flooring, and many more. However, hardwood is on a come back trail and is fast becoming the favored product beating the completion like laminate flooring hands down.

Expansion areas are spaces left around the perimeter of rooms, against fixed objects such as columns, thresholds, hearths, skirting boards, and other stationary items built or secured into the framing structure of the home. Even though Hardwood flooring used is no longer living and breathing it still reacts to moisture changes in the environment. The cells in the solid wood will take on or absorb moisture when the relative humidity is high, or when exposed to water. Expansion takes place, and the hardwood grows, for lack of a clearer term, across the grain (width) of the plank (see below, not all will react this way). Conversely when air moisture levels decrease, moisture content evaporates, shrinking of the solid wood will occur.

The durability of an engineered floor makes it an excellent choice for households with little feet running around, whether they belong to the family pooch or your little darlings. This type of flooring is resistant to scratching, dents, UV rays and moisture, so whatever accidents should occur, engineered flooring can be mopped, brushed or vacuumed and it will look as good as new. If you do somehow manage to damage engineered flooring, it can be remedied with a quick sanding down, which will restore it to the condition it was in the minute after it was laid. This added durability makes engineered flooring suitable for kitchens as well as living and dining rooms.
